#ScalingBarriers: Save Yourself from the Humiliation of Bad Breath

There is nothing as embarrassing as being in a social gathering with friends and peers, only for your breath to rob you of the fun of meeting new friends and even drag your self-esteem on the ground, especially when you try to whisper into the ear of someone you have a crush on and he/she brings their hands close to their nose as a shield for your lethal and smelly breath. You would so wish the ground can open up to provide the quickest escape route – it’s that bad!

Bad breath can be very humiliating and distressing, it not only portrays an oral health disorder but allows for pleasant friends, family members, and colleagues to feel alienated as a result of this situation. For those that suffer this embarrassing health challenge, bad breath has become a barrier in their social life as they struggle to find a lasting solution to it.

As trivial as the subject matter might sound, bad breath; also called Halitosis or Malodor is a major health concern for many, and has formed a subject of critical discussion amongst dental health practitioners today. To stress how important this is, bad breath has destroyed strong and prospective relationships. Dr John Woodall, DDS, a dentist with Woodall and McNeill in Raleigh, N.C., attest to this in his recent article on the WebMD online page.

How is bad breath caused? The answer is not farfetched, bad breath is often caused by a buildup of bacteria in the mouth that causes inflammation and gives off deadly odors or gases that smell like sulfur or even worse. Everybody has nasty breath at one point or another, like when you get out of bed in the morning but shouldn’t hold in all day long.

Studies show that about 80% of bad breath comes from an oral source like; gum disease or cavities, food particles trapped in the tonsils, cracked fillings... Internal medical conditions cause bad breath like; diabetes, liver disease, chronic bronchitis, respiratory tract infections… Other possible causes of a bad breath is a dry mouth, acid reflux…

The above illustration might sound like a very bad case for an individual with bad breath issues, but still; it can be treated if managed effectively. Scaling the barrier of bad breath starts with good oral hygiene; brush and floss after every meal to help reduce the odor-causing bacteria in your mouth. Get a mouthwashes or mouth rinse and stick to it except if it is too harsh as some can be, this will help to wade off cavities and bacteria-causing plaque bringing bad breath.

Mind what you eat, this is so because after the food has digested into your bloodstreams you exhale whatever you have eaten. Eat healthy foods and avoid breath boosters (spicy foods) like garlic and onions. Bad breath cannot be eliminated overnight, it take a gradual process to totally wear out.

Also, cut down on your alcohol intake because it leads to dry mouth, which further dehydrates an individual leading to bad breath. Always stay hydrated; brush your teeth after every meal and if not possible drink lots of water it can help speed up the process of cleaning harmful bacteria and debris from between your teeth. You can also choose to chew a sugarless gum that cools and gives nice and fresh breath 20 minutes after a meal, this will help with saliva flow. Don’t be tempted to chew a sugar-mint sweet even after eating as this will only give a quick fix to the offensive smell but nothing will harm the bacteria while the sugar sits on your teeth and make matters even worse.
