(Paracetamol Suspension 120mg/5ml)

DESCRIPTION

Avipol®, a brand of paracetamol is a pink pleasant tasting, strawberry flavoured suspension. Each 5ml of the suspension contains 120mg of paracetamol.

CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY

Avipol is an analgesic and antipyretic agent. The mechanism of action is not clear and may be related to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in the Central Nervous system. Paracetamol is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract with peak concentration occurring about 10-60 minutes after oral administration.

It is distributed into most of the body tissues. Plasma protein binding is negligible at usual therapeutic concentration. Paracetamol is metabolized mainly in the liver and excreted in the urine.

INDICATIONS

It is indicated in the symptomatic management of mild to moderated pain and fever.

SIDE EFFECTS

Avipol is generally well tolerated. Side effects observed are rare and usually mild. They include; Skin rashes, Urticaria and other hypersensitivity reactions. Haematological reactions including thrombocytopenia, Leucopenia, Pancytopenia, Neutropenia, Agranulocytosis.

CONTRAINDICATION/ PRECAUTION

It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug.

Avipol is administered with caution in patients with impaired Kidney or Liver function, or in patients taking any medication that may affect the liver.

OVERDOSAGE

Overdose may occur after ingestion of a single dose of 10 – 15g paracetamol and this may result in severe hepatocellular necrosis and less often renal tubular necrosis.

Clinical manifestation associated with overdose include Cyanosis, anemia, Jaundice, Skin eruptions, Fever, Emesis, CNS stimulation, delirium, Methemoglobinemia progressing to depression, coma, Vascular collapse, Convulsion and death.

Treatment include emptying of stomach by inducing emesis with Ipecac syrup or by Gastric lavage and administration of Activated charcoal via nasogastric tube. This is accompanied with Supportive and Symptomatic measures. 

N.B: Laboratory parameters and Vital signs must be monitored closely.

DOSAGE

Children : 

3  Months – 12 Months                  :  60 – 120mg/5ml  ( Half – One teaspoonful)                                                        

1 year       –  5 years                      :  120 – 250mg/5ml ( One– Two teaspoonfuls)                                                         

6 years     – 12 years                      :  250 – 500mg/5ml ( One–Two Tablespoonful)

This doses may be given 3 – 4 Times daily as required

Adult:  500mg – 1g                       : Two – Four Tablespoonful Every 4 – 6 hours 

                                                         up to a max of 4g daily.

PRESENTATION

120mg/5ml of the suspension is packed in 60ml bottles.

Store below 30oC in a dry place, protect from direct sunlight
