COMPOSITION:
Betamethasone USP ….. 0.05%w/w

Topical steroids are used in addition to emollients (moisturizers) for treating inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. A topical steroid is used when patches of eczema or dermatitis flare up. Neomycin as an antibiotic, is used to prevent or treat skin infections caused by bacteria. It is not effective against fungal or viral infections, Inhibits production of protein in bacteria, causing bacterial cell death. Neomycin is used to reduce the risk of infection during surgery of the bowel. Neomycin is also used to reduce the symptoms of hepatic coma.
Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent that is used for the treatment of dermal infections caused by various species of pathogenic dermatophytes and yeasts
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
Metazone® cream provides a comprehensive treatment for various inflammatory dermatological disorders that are combined with bacterial or superficial fungal infections of the skin. Betamethasone dipropionate is one of the most potent topical corticosteroid available and rapidly controls the symptoms such as itching, redness and swelling. Many times the inflammatory skin disorder which responds to topical corticosteroids are accompanied with bacterial and/or fungal infections of the skin. In these conditions, treatment with anti- inflammatory agents alone is not sufficient and a proper antibiotic has to be added in the regimen.
Clotrimazole is a broad spectrum synthetic antifungal agent which has fungicidal action against all the fungi responsible for superficial fungal infections of the skin. Neomycin sulphate is a broad spectrum antibacterial.
INDICATIONS
- Metazone cream is used to treat inflammatory skin conditions more particularly in conditions that are already infected or likely to be infected. It also acts as anti-itching agent. These conditions include:
- Eczema of various types.
- Skin inflammation due to allergies or irritants (allergic contact dermatitis or irritant contact dermatitis).
- Inflammatory skin condition with greasy, red and scaly areas (seborrhoeic dermatitis). Psoriasis.
- Thickened skin rash caused by excessive ing scratching to relieve itching (neurodermatitis, pieg lichen simplex).
- An eruption of hard nodules in the skin accompanied by intense itching (prurigo nodularis).
- Skin disorder causing a flat, itchy, violet rash, usually on the wrists, shins, lower back and genitals (lichen planus).
- Inflammatory skin disease known as discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE).
- Intense and widespread reddening of the skin (generalised erythroderma) in combination with oral or injected corticosteroids.
- Reactions to insect bites and stings.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
A sufficient quantity of Metazone cream should be rubbed twice daily (morning and evening) into the affected skin area. Note that the application of the cream should be done after it has been cleaned. The treatment should be continued for several days after the disappearance of symptoms, such as itching and burning in order to assure complete eradication of the infection. In highly acute diseases the cream can be applied to sterile gauze to maintain contact with the skin as long as possible. In refractory cases, please see a physician where no response is observed after treatment for 8-10 day.
SIDE EFFECTS
Metazone® cream is usually well tolerated. Minor side effects observed which may occur include: dry skin; mild burning, hives, local redness, tingling or stinging at the application site.
CONTRA–INDICATIONS
MetazoneRcream is contraindicated in:
- Patients that are hypersensitive to the preparation or any of its constituents.
- Dermatoses in children under one year of age, including dermatitis and napkin eruptions.
- Acne and peri–oral dermatitis, skin lesions caused by infection with viruses (e.g. herpes simplex chickenpox)
PRECAUTIONS
Long term continuous topical therapy should be avoided where possible, particularly in infants and children, as adrenal suppression can occur even without occlusion. The face, more than other areas of the body may exhibit atrophic changes after prolonged treatment with potent topical corticosteroids. This must be borne in mind when treating such conditions as psoriasis, discoid lupus erythematosus and severe eczema with Betamethasone. If applied to the eyelids, care is needed to ensure that the preparation does not enter the eye, as glaucoma might result.
WARNING
- This medicine is for external use on the affected areas of skin only.
- You should never use this medicine as a moisturiser.
- Avoid getting this medicine in the eyes, or inside the mouth or nose. Rinse with cold water if accidental contact occurs.
- If corticosteroids are used long term, on large จ areas of skin, raw skin, skin folds, or under airtight dressings (including nappies) they are absorbed into the body more. This increases the risk of local side effects such as skin risk of thinning, and those on other parts of the body, such as a decrease in the production of natural hormones by the adrenal glands. For this reason, continuous, long-term use of this medicine should be avoided wherever possible, particularly in children and on large areas of skin. You should only use airtight dressings over the affected area if instructed by your doctor.
- Do not use this medicine for longer than instructed by your doctor, or for recurrent infections without consulting your doctor, as this may cause the skin to become over- sensitive or allergic to the medicine.
- If this medicine is used on the face, wherever possible it should not be used for longer than five days. You should not use airtight dressings to cover the area treated.
- If used in children, wherever possible this medicine should not be used for longer than five days, or on the face. DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Long-term use or withdrawal of topical corticosteroids may aggravate psoriasis. Therefore, there should be an interval of at least 1 week between the discontinuance of topical steroids and the starting of psoriasis treatment with anthralin.
PREGNANCY: Safety in the use of the cream during pregnancy has not been evaluated.
OVERDOSE: This medicine may be harmful if swallowed. If swallowing or overdose is suspected, contact your physician or take the person to the hospital.
